Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for over 5,000 years. It is a safe, effective, painless and affordable way to treat a variety of challenges that cancer patients and family members often face. Acupuncture can help with pain, stress, headaches, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, digestive problems and smoking cessation. The needles used in acupuncture are as fine as a strand of hair.

Barbara O’Leary L.Ac. is seeing patients on Mondays and Fridays by appointment.

Art Therapy

Art therapists believe that the act of making a piece of art triggers internal activity that contributes to physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Physical benefits include decreased heart rate/blood pressure/respiration, and are attributed to being involved in an activity one enjoys. Emotional benefits are achieved for participants with physical or emotional illnesses, who have difficulty talking about their fears and hopes, or about their anger and other strong emotions. The creation of art helps people get in touch with thoughts and feelings that are often hidden from the conscious mind. Finally, spiritual healing is accomplished by participants who claim that a creator or higher power has worked on them through the conduit of art. Simply viewing art takes people to a place of deeper relaxation and peace.

Art Therapy Support Group meets weekly at Studio 706.

Chi Kung

Chi Kung, the art of healing through breathing, is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The word Chi Kung is made up of two Chinese words. Qi (Chi) is pronounced chee and is usually translated to mean the life force or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe. The second word, Gong (Kung), pronounced gung, means an accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together Chi Kung means cultivating energy, it is a system practiced for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality.

The gentle rhythmic movements of Chi Kung reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. Chi Kung classes are held in six week sessions several times throughout the year. Certified Martial Arts Instructor Don Johnson is specially trained to provide this service.

Hypnotherapy

Studies have proven the benefits self-hypnosis has on the body, which is why Clinic Cancer Care is offering a series of classes to learn more about this healing technique. Classes are designed to provide patients with a complete understanding of self-hypnosis including basic mechanics and techniques, use of autosuggestions, refinement of techniques and application of self-hypnotic understanding to improve other areas of the patient's life.

Classes are instructed by Patrick Marsolek, Clinical Hypnotherapist.

Massage Therapy

"The physician must be experienced in many things, but most assuredly in rubbing."
- Hippocrates

Massage Therapy is the most ancient of all the healing practices. The benefits of massage therapy include pain reduction, increased relaxation and reduced muscle tension. Medical research shows that massage therapy is beneficial to cancer patients by easing pain, nausea and fatigue. Massage promotes better sleep, improves concentration, reduces anxiety and creates an overall sense of well being.

Certified Massage Therapists in our community have come together as independent contractors to bring comfort and to improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Massage is available by appointment.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga of the Heart complements conventional medicine by adapting traditional yoga practices to meet the physiological needs of cancer patients. Yoga brings clarity of mind, builds the immune system, promotes strength, endurance, flexibility and balance for both body and mind, improves Respiratory System and creates greater mental and emotional health.

Yoga classes are held in eight week sessions several times throughout the year. Certified Yoga Teacher, Pamela Joe Quinn, RYT has a special passion for working with people to uncover their own place of peace.
